TTX for Teachers
This project was a runner-up for the "Build a thing" prize on our Pandemics (Sept 2024) course. The text below is an excerpt from the final project.
Why do this exercise?
The worst time to plan for an event is whilst it’s happening.
In every given year, there is a 1 in 50 chance of another pandemic1. This means there might be another pandemic similar, less significant, or worse than Covid-19 during your time as staff at a secondary school. Right now, your school has an opportunity to examine the protocols and policies in place to respond to a local and national outbreak.
Table-top exercises are often used by Governments to prepare for pandemics. The UK Government in 2019 ran a pandemic-preparedness exercise called Exercise Cygnus, and the Covid-19 Inquiry Module 1 recommended that further table-top exercises be run to enhance preparation for the next pandemic. Table-top exercises can help:
- Ensure that the plan would stand up to a real event and that there are no important gaps in policies and procedures
- Train the key persons involved (i.e. those who would be responsible for planning and implementing the plan)
- Strengthen the links between the various organizations (in this case, individuals) that may be involved.
